THE PROBLEM

The highway was built in 1980’s with very stiff cement treated granular base. The asphalt layers had suffered from extensive reflective cracking.

THE SOLUTION

The upper bituminous surfacing and binder layer was milled off, Tensar AR-G installed and the same thickness of new binder and surfacing was placed.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Istanbul - Ankara Highway was originally constructed with the following pavement section:

  • Surfacing (5cm)
  • Binder Layer (8cm)
  • Bituminous Treated Base (12cm)
  • Cement Treated Granular Base (22cm)
  • Plant Mix Sub-base (28cm)

A trial length 50m long incorporating Tensar AR-G was installed to demonstrate its ability to reduce structural cracking. The upper 13cm of asphalt was milled off. The surface of the bituminous treated base was cleaned by air compressor and brushed followed by a sprayed bitumen tack coat (1.4kg/m2) directly to the surface. AR-G was then installed and covered with new binder and surfacing layers.
