THE PROBLEM

The project required construction of several sections of retaining wall adjacent to the new highway. To optimise space and provide an attractive finish, a curved wall layout was needed. Aesthetics were important on this prestigious project.

THE SOLUTION

During the construction of the Banská Bystrica – Northern Bypass section of the R1 Motorway, three TensarTech TW1 retaining walls were constructed, measuring a total of 460m in length.  The TensarTech TW1 modular block wall system offered significant advantages over a traditional reinforce concrete wall, as it helped to reduce the cost of foundation works and enabled very simple construction of the curved structure.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Wall No. 254 - This TensarTech TW1 retaining wall consists of three sections. The first section with a length of 100.67m forms the right wingwall to a bridge approach embankment.  The second wall, 17.8m in length forms the left wingwall. The third wall connects the first and the second wall. Wall height varies from 1.14m to 7.8m.

Wall No. 255 – This TensarTech TW1 retaining wall is situated at the base of an embankment supporting the highway. The length of the wall is 87.1m, the height is from 0.28 to 5.07m and the face is 282 m2. The retaining wall is finished with a robust parapet which transfers the horizontal loads from any potential vehicle impacts.

Wall No. 256 – This TensarTech TW1 retaining wall is located along the central divide and supports the eastbound lane of the highway which is elevated above the westbound lane. Wall height ranges from 1.7m to 4.4m and measures 240m in length. The wall is topped with the parapet units anchored with Tensar geogrid into which posts for the crash barriers and noise barrier were installed.
