THE PROBLEM
The investor had a limited budget and was keen to optimise the available space in a sloping area where an access road to the store had been proposed.
THE SOLUTION
The retaining structure solved the issue of different elevations between the parking area and the original ground level where the access roads for customers and supply of goods was to be constructed.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The access road for the customers and supply of goods to the store is situated above the wall. Also, a car park is located at the base of the retaining wall. Due to limited use of available space, a combination of a reinforced concrete wall and reinforced soil wall was chosen. The latter of which measured 110m in length and featured 2 bends. The height of the structure varied, reaching a maximum of 5.8 metres. Also, unsuitable foundation soil was located under the structure and so the ground was improved with a Tensar MSL™ (Mechanically Stabilised Layer) utilising Tensar TriAx® geogrids.
